Diana is cliqz’s Content Manager. She was also its very first employee —or, as a computer scientist might put it, cliqz’s number 0 employee. Diana works closely with the engineering team, from improving content sourcing, designing and testing new products, to soliciting and incorporating user feedback. Prior to cliqz, Diana worked in a range of positions in the entertainment industry. She started as an editor and eventually moved up to head producer for a daily infotainment program. During this time, Diana had fun interviewing stars like Jim Carey, Zoey Deschanel, and Jack Black.
The news has always featured prominently in her career.
Diana has a degree in Journalism and Communication Sciences from the Western University in Timisoara, Romania. In 1999, she came to Munich with an Erasmus scholarship and fell in love with the beauty of the region. Diana decided to stay and feed her passion for foreign cultures and languages by getting a Master's degree in Cultural Anthropology at Ludwig Maximilian University.
Piroska studied Anglo-Saxon and Slavic philology (in Pécs, Hungary). Being inspired by seminal science fiction literature such as Blade Runner and Neuromancer, she decided to do a PhD (in Tilburg, Netherlands) in a field that combines languages and AI: natural language processing.
After spending several years on training algorithms to understand what people do when they must talk to a machine, for example about train connections ("Computer, I never told you I wanted to go to Mügli am See! Restart again!"), or when they must sort zoology metadata into museum databases ("Computer, 'dead humid leaves' should be the finding place of this animal, not the cause of its death!"), Piroska decided to go back to her roots, and has taken up a position at the Research Institute for Linguistics (in Budapest, Hungary).
Sooner than she thought was she back to a multicultural setting, not being able to resist temptation to join cliqz as data engineer.
While at academia, Piroska's research areas were text mining, knowledge representation, discourse processing, and digital humanities. At cliqz, she loves diagnosing language patterns that reflect how users communicate with machines.
Gábor is a theoretical linguist specialized in natural language processing (NLP) applications. He joined cliqz in July 2013 after spending four years at the Research Institute for Computer Science in Budapest, Hungary.
Among programmers, he's always referred to as the linguist, while among linguists he's always the programmer, and Gábor loves switching between these roles on a daily basis.
As an engineer at cliqz, he is responsible for tackling NLP tasks such as named entity recognition, morphological analysis, or content-based document classification.
Gábor is in the third year of his Ph.D. studies. His research interests include machine learning and the semantics of natural language.
His dream is to build a machine with a sense of humor.

Tobias is a working student in Strategy and Business Intelligence at cliqz. He joined Cliqz in October 2013. Some of his daily tasks and achievements so far have been database analysis, and the removal of the kitchen door. Furthermore, Tobias supports Christian in daily tasks and issues. Another very important task of Tobias is to reduce the average age of company employees, by being the young chicken of the team.
Before Tobias moved to Munich for studying business and computer science at the Technical University of Munich, he lived in a small village in the south of Baden-Württemberg called Bahlingen which has the highest rate of sunny days in whole Germany.
To gather some practical experience beside his studies, Tobias enjoyed several internships in business development and sales at companies in the energy, internet, and technology sectors.
Christian is Head of Strategy and Business Intelligence at cliqz. He joined cliqz in July 2013, as employee number 6. Some of his first achievements so far have been (i) market screening, supplier selection and hands-on implementation of a fantastic new coffee machine for the office, (ii) boosting overall team fitness by permanently talking about different sports and running/playing tennis with colleagues, and (iii) negotiating data agreements to ensure we have enough food to train our machine learning algorithms.
Coming from a small town in Rhineland-Palia (quote from a good friend from India: I think there lived more people in my apartment house in Mumbai than in your whole town.) he fell in love with Munich in 2005 starting his apprenticeship at Siemens AG and his studies in Business Administration.
Eager to learn how business in different industries and countries works, Christian joined McKinsey & Company in 2008. 3 years, 13 projects, 3 continents and multiple short/sleepless nights later, Christian started his MBA at Harvard Business School and graduated in May 2013 after two fabulous years.
Everything you need to know about JP's early life is summarized by the 1983 movie Wargames after which JP realized he was not alone. JP spent most of his formative years tinkering with early computers (mostly TRS-80s) and hooking them up with devices that were not made for them, connecting them with modems built from plumbing supplies and dipping circuit boards in acid in his teenage room. All this in order to try to illegally send bits at very low speeds (1200 bauds half duplex) over the nascent Internet. As telephone companies worldwide started to allow private people to send data over telephone lines, JP turned his attention to a nearly successful alternative rock career and studied philosophy and mathematical economics. Around 1994, Hubert Burda rescued him from a comfortable academic life and threw him in the wild waters of the early Internet where a few years later he became CTO and then CEO of Burda Digital. After almost successfully going back to his basement (building 3D printers), academia (studying massive data at Stanford) and his garage (tinkering with cheap old Italian cars), he founded cliqz and rejoined Burda as Chief Scientist.

Dragan is Engineer at cliqz. Thanks to his love for software tools and dynamic languages such as Git and Python and to his pragmatic approach to machine learning and probability, Dragan currently ensures that cliqz has efficient machine learning algorithms.
Dragan holds a B.Sc. in Computer Science and M.Sc. in Financial Engineering.
He is interested in large scale machine learning, system programming, computer languages, cryptography, and many other related topics. In his spare time you might find him reading a book or practising sucking at table football.
Marc is a natural born optimist and knows that eventually everything will be good. He enjoys being challenged and has a constant desire to bend reality in our favor. Though, whenever he is not engaged in punching holes into the space-time-continuum, Marc is a very pragmatic dude: focusing his thinking on how to achieve the best possible product, how to continuously learn, and how to become more ambitious. He believes that everyone at cliqz should make one mistake each day as the only measurement that the team is working at the edge of technology. Marc also believes in learning something new every day. In fact he believes that cliqz is more of a university with a curriculum for outstanding talents and only is a company as a side effect. Before starting his own exciting curriculum as co-CEO of cliqz, Marc obtained a PhD in Information Technology at TU Munich, worked at McKinsey & Company as an engagement manager, and headed the Strategy and M&A department of the publicly listed Internet holding TOMORROW FOCUS AG.
Little Robot has a strong background in computing. There is an ongoing debate in the team about how old he is, as he insists that counting should start at 0 and not at 1. His ancestral roots go back to Konrad Zuse, but he is a true world citizen and works on many continents. Sometimes Little Robot does multiple things at the same time – giving the impression there are actually multiples of him around. As he moves with nearly 300,000 km/s, he is our favourite for all kinds of errands. Since joining our company, he has developed a particular interest in log-file parsing, producing statistics with map-reduce, drawing graphs, and sending emails and reports to team members. He is firm in C, C++, Hadoop, and Elastic Search, but also likes to use Python on a regular basis. He usually works at night and supports the team with a range of transactional tasks. When the team comes to the office, he has usually already prepared all kind of statistics. However, he refuses all our social attempts with the answer “Connection refused while accessing social-API”. We therefore unfortunately never see him on our Friday “Drinks and Social gatherings”, office meetings, parties, Oktoberfest visits, sport events, at the coffee machine, joint breakfast or pizza in the office.
