Updated 2:31 am, Tuesday, April 23, 2013 Keys is charged with giving the hacking group Anonymous the log-in credentials to the computer system of The Tribune Co., which owns the Los Angeles Times, Chicago Tribune, Baltimore Sun and other media properties. Keys is charged with two counts that each carry a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison — transmitting and attempting to transmit information with the intent of damaging a protected computer. The indictment fed an ongoing debate over when an online prank becomes an Internet crime and whether the government is going too far in punishing the perpetrator. The debate was sparked by the suicide in January of Aaron Swartz, a 26-year-old Internet activist who was found dead in his Brooklyn apartment as he awaited trial on allegations that he illegally downloaded millions of academic articles and helped post millions of court documents on the Internet. Tribune employees spent 333 hours responding to the 2010 hacking that Keys is charged with orchestrating, costing the company of $17,650 in labor costs alone, according to an October 2012 search warrant affidavit filed by the FBI. In the affidavit, FBI Special Agent Gabriel Andrews said there is probable cause to believe that Keys broke into the Tribune Media computer system after he was fired in October 2010 by the Tribune-owned FOX affiliate KTXL-TV in Sacramento. Microsoft yesterday launched an app letting you order Pizza Hut from your Xbox 360 with Kinect controland everything, but the real objective is clearly to humiliate Sony for its paltry PS3 pizza promotion with Papa John's four years ago. The Create Your Pizza App lets you order discs of steaming cheese atop bread product direct from your Xbox 360 dashboard using a controller or Kinect gestures and commands, which is surely far easier than picking up a phone or using your computer. But wait, there's more! You can also share your orders to Facebook. Oh my! Sony, in comparison, merely added a link to the Papa John's site on the console's browser homepage. What a joke! Why, that's even less useful than EverQuest 2's /pizza command, which launched a Pizza Hut website window directly from the game. In your face, Sony! PS3 will die! You can download the app now from the app marketplace on your Xbox 360 dashboard: (from: www.shacknews.com)

27 articles and 22 pictures on this topic

The launch kicks off with the release of an iOS game called Amazing Studly Strikes, but the studio has quietly released the first two episodes of a Web comic, and episode three just dropped to accompany the release of the mobile game. The game app will also include the Web comic, according to Inzen’s co-founder, Gerald Tock. Inzen was started in October last year, and is made of six developers, with the founders and writers in Singapore, and relies on some development work from China. Its Web comic was created by artists in Uruguay. The comic and its first game center on a character they created, G-man Studly. The game appears to be a tapping frenzy, with waves of enemies attacking G-man Studly from different corners of the screen, requiring you to tap on them furiously as your character scales a skyscraper. Tock said the team is hoping to make the rest of its project happen. It has enough material for another “larger” game and four mini games to be produced under the Game Show Warriors banner. It plans to wait for the response to the first episode to decide whether to continue, however. Besides having people download and play their games, Inzen is hoping that the investment into the online manga will get fans making derivative works such as fan fiction, videos or cosplaying as the characters. Inzen is angel-funded in the “low six figures”, said Tock. The five founding developers in Singapore are graduates from the Singapore-MIT Gambit Game Lab. Prior to creating this project, some of them produced apps that enjoyed some success on the mobile scene. Dark Dot was a shooter they produced in 2011 that climbed to the top of the action charts in 48 countries including China, the US and Singapore, and was the top free iOS app in several Southeast Asian countries. The social media company has reached a deal with Publicis's Starcom MediaVest Group worth hundreds of millions of dollars over multiple years. The agreement is the first of its kind: a partnership between one of the largest buyers of advertising and Twitter. It comes as television networks prepare to woo advertisers with pricey presentations to showcase their fall prime-time schedules. It also heralds the arrival of Twitter as a must-have digital offering as more people visit social networking sites on mobile devices while watching TV. A recent study from Nielsen correlated increases in Twitter chatter with TV ratings. Read Does Social Sign-In Shift Signal Trouble For Facebook? The stock is down 27%. Every day an analyst slashes his or her price target on the stock, as well as lowering EPS and revenue estimates. The world has come to realization that the iPhone market as currently constructed is hitting saturation . The next wave of growth is going to be very hard for Apple to find because its revenue and profits are so gigantic that growing from here will be a challenge. Whatever product Apple makes next will not be as lucrative as the iPhone . Then, there's the margins. Those are going to come down when the product mix shifts to lower margin iPad Minis , and potentially a lower priced iPhone. Samsung stole Apple's spotlight all quarter. Apple hasn't had a single product announcement since October of last year. It doesn't appear to have any new products lined up until June at the earliest. The only time the management team speaks is during earnings calls . Lately, earnings calls have not been great. Apple is missing analyst estimates, something that never happened in the past . Tonight, some people are expecting Apple to miss its own guidance . If that were to happen, watch out. It's going to be a mess. But, here's the good news for Apple. Tonight could be the low point. It could produce relatively bad results. It could put out revenue guidance that's so low analysts go scrambling to Excel to make their projections even lower. After this earnings report, the future looks very good for Apple. We should get new iPhone software in June. Then a new iPhone 5S in the June-August time frame. Perhaps even a cheaper iPhone around that time . Then there's the iPad 5, which could be out this summer or fall . The iPad Mini will likely get an upgrade. An iWatch or an Apple television could be out by year end, or early next year . Those events will give Apple an opportunity to reset the narrative on the company . It can get back to talking about why people love iPhones and iPads. Because while it's been silent, the story has shifted. You would think Apple is going out of business the way people talk about the company right now. It's not. Even in this quarter, which is going to be a rough one, Apple is expected to generate $42.3 billion in revenue. For some context, Google 's total 2012 revenue was $50 billion. Tonight, Apple has a chance to hit the reset button. It can lower expectations while hinting about its plans for the future. Here's what sell-side analysts are looking for from Apple, via Gene Munster : Revenue: $42.3 billion EPS: $9.98 Gross margin: 38.5% iPhone: 36.5 million iPad: 18.3 million Mac: 4.1 million iPod : 6.25 million June quarter revenue: $38.6 billion June quarter EPS: $8.97 June quarter gross margin: 38.6% Munster also adds that the buy-side is thinking iPhones come in at 35 million units. It also thinks the gross margin is 38%. SEE ALSO: You Have To See This Chart To Understand Why Apple's Earnings Reports Are Different Now Please follow SAI on Twitter and Facebook . Ubisoft confirmed earlier this month a Wii U version would also be made available, and this week, they released a new game trailer that highlights all of the unique gameplay mechanics you can expect in this version of the game. In the Wii U version of Splinter Cell: Blacklist, you’ll be using the Wii U GamePad in a number of ways that allow you to manipulate Sam Fisher’s gadgets, like controlling drones and operating spy cameras, as well as be able to access your inventory on the fly. Players will also be able to mark their targets from the GamePad, to then execute them, which we assume would have been the result of marking them in the game. The source who told us about this pitch said Spotify "wants to do the House of Cards thing that Netflix is doing." Now we know why. Netflix reported earnings last night, and they have investors going gaga. The company's stock is up 25%! Many credit the "House of Cards thing" for Netflix's success. Briefly, here is the business case for a show like House of Cards on Netflix or Game of Thrones on HBO : The show costs a lot of money to produce. But that's OK, because the money goes toward making the product good and bringing in star actors and star directors. The quality and the star power are generate buzz, which will cause people to sign up for subscriptions for Netflix or HBO. (Think about the people who started paying for Showtime this year for "Homeland.") Those new subscribers are too lazy to quit Netflix, HBO, or Spotify after they finish watching the show they signed up for. So they stay members for 10 years, paying $120/year or more. (Yesterday, Netflix CEO Reed Hastings said only 8,000 people quit Netflix after watching all of House of Cards. Netflix has 30 million subscribers.) Over a long time, millions of people paying $120/year more than recoups the cost of making the high quality show. Please follow SAI on Twitter and Facebook . (AP) — Katherine Russell was a talented artist, a good student who grew up Christian, the daughter of a suburban doctor. Then she went off to college in Boston. A few years later, she had dropped out of school, converted to Islam and was Katherine Tsarnaeva, wife of a man who would become a suspect in the deadly Boston Marathon bombings and a subject of one of the biggest manhunts in American history. Tamerlan Tsarnaev, 26, and his brother, Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, 19, two ethnic Chechen brothers from southern Russia, are accused of planting two shrapnel-packed pressure-cooker bombs near the marathon finish line last week, killing three people and injuring more than 200. Tamerlan was killed in a getaway attempt after a gunbattle with police. Dzhokhar, who was captured hiding in a tarp-covered boat in a suburban Boston backyard and is hospitalized, was charged Monday with using a weapon of mass destruction to kill. Authorities have not released a motive, but two U.S. officials, speaking on the condition of anonymity because they weren't authorized to publicly discuss the investigation, told The Associated Press that evidence suggests the brothers were motivated by a radical brand of Islam. Tsarnaeva, 24, has avoided the public eye since her identity became known Friday. On the rare occasions when she has emerged from her parents' Rhode Island home, she is dressed in the traditional Muslim headscarf, a hijab, and has refused to answer questions. Those who know her and knew her husband describe her as sweet and dedicated to Islam. Tsarnaeva grew up with two younger sisters on a quiet cul-de-sac in North Kingstown, a rural, wooded town a 90-minute drive south from the apartment she would eventually share in Cambridge, Mass., with her husband and his family. Her father, Warren Russell, is an emergency doctor whose Facebook profile lists his high school alma mater as the elite New Hampshire boarding school Phillips Exeter Academy and college as Yale . Her mother, Judith Russell, was listed on her Facebook profile as working at a social services agency. Tsarnaeva attended North Kingstown High School, graduating in 2007. Her yearbook entry lists her plans as college and the Peace Corps. Her art teacher for four years, Amos Trout Paine, remembered her talent in painting and drawing and said she was at the top of her class. "The reason why I remember her is she was very nice and very smart," Paine said. "She was ready to learn." She had friends and was well integrated into class, he said, and did not seem to be interested in religion. "There was none of that with her," he said. "She was neutral." She went off to Suffolk University, and Paine did not see her again after that. He said he was surprised to hear she had dropped out of school and even more surprised to hear she was married to a man now accused of bombing the marathon. "From how I know her, she's a really good person," he said. Suffolk University said Tsarnaeva attended from 2007 to 2010 and majored in communications. Her lawyer, Amato DeLuca, said she was a student when she met Tamerlan Tsarnaev at a nightclub, introduced by one of her girlfriends. Tsarnaev, who had attended Bunker Hill Community College, was no longer in school, DeLuca said, and was seeing another woman at the time. "They went out for a while, and then they stopped and then they went out again," DeLuca said. Tsarnaeva knew nothing about Islam when they met, said her lawyer, adding he didn't know if marriage was a motivating factor in her conversion. The reason was that she is a believer, he said. "She believes in the tenets of Islam and of the Quran," DeLuca said. "She believes in God." The couple got married on June 21, 2010, a Monday, in a ceremony performed by Imam Taalib Mahdee, of Masjid al Qur'aan, in Boston's Dorchester neighborhood, according to their marriage certificate, which lists his profession as a driver. Mahdee told The Associated Press Tsarnaeva called him saying she and Tsarnaev wanted to get married. Mahdee asked if they had the requisite licenses and she said yes. Mahdee performed the 15-minute ceremony in the mosque office. Two witnesses were present, but Mahdee does not remember who they were. "They requested that it was a simple wedding," Mahdee said. Both seemed happy, he said. "They seemed like two people who were getting ready to get married," Mahdee said. Mahdee said he never saw the couple again and that they never attended his mosque. The couple had a daughter and lived with her in the Tsarnaev family apartment, which was shared over the years with his mother, Zubeidat, and father, Anzor, now divorced, and Dzhokhar, DeLuca said. He said Tsarnaeva rarely saw her brother-in-law there because he was living in the dorms at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth. Tamerlan Tsarnaev's relatives have said that in recent years he became a devout Muslim and prayed five times a day. DeLuca said the couple attended the Islamic Society of Boston Cultural Center, although the mosque's executive assistant, Nichole Mossalam, said that Tsarnaeva had never been there to her knowledge. Leaders at the mosque say Tamerlan Tsarnaev did attend and in recent months had outbursts during two sermons that encouraged Muslims to celebrate American institutions such as the Fourth of July and figures including Martin Luther King Jr. Last year, Tsarnaev traveled to Russia for about six months, while his wife stayed in their Cambridge apartment. His aunt said he spoke with his wife every day using Skype and at times she would instruct him on how to observe religious practices correctly when he lapsed. Tsarnaeva's lawyer said she had no reason to suspect her husband of anything and was focused on supporting her family, working 70 to 80 hours, seven days a week as a home health care aide. Her husband cared for their daughter when she was away, Deluca said. But Anne Kilzer, a Belmont, Mass., resident who went with her daughters to the Tsarnaev home to get facials from Tamerlan Tsarnaev's mother, said when she visited the apartment Tsarnaeva was always there with the baby and her mother-in-law. Kilzer, who had not been to the home since around Labor Day, when the mother told her she was leaving the country, described Tamerlan Tsarnaev as surly and intimidating and painted his wife as cowed and intimidated by him. "She was a very sweet woman, but I think kind of brainwashed by him," she said. She said Tsarnaeva seemed lonely and would bring out the baby for her to hold when she visited. The apartment was so cramped and crowded, Kilzer said, that it would have been difficult for Tsarnaev to hide criminal activity from his wife. "Maybe she'll provide answers for all of us," she said. Federal authorities have asked to interview Tsarnaeva, and DeLuca said he is discussing with them how to proceed. DeLuca would not provide details on what his client told him her husband was doing in the days before and after the April 15 bombing but said as far as he knew nothing seemed amiss to her in the days after. Tsarnaev was home when his wife left for work the last day he was alive, DeLuca said. Police say he was run over by a car driven by his brother as he fled gunfire early Friday morning. His brother was captured later that night, wounded and bloody, in Watertown, 10 miles west of Boston; his lawyer has declined to comment. DeLuca said she learned of her husband was suspected of being responsible for bombing the Boston Marathon the same way a lot of other people did: on TV. ___ Zezima reported from Cambridge, Mass.
